Dr. Vince Adams of the US Department of Energy

During the previous 21 years, Dr. Adams has managed six major and highly visible DOE projects and programs that required constant and effective interactions and communications with legislators, environmental regulators, public citizens, public interest groups, news media and industry. These projects entailed the management of homeland security initiatives, and the management of radioactive, hazardous, and mixed wastes governed by a wide array of ES&H laws and regulations. Dr. Adams has the unique distinction of having both in-depth experience and specialized degrees in all three media (water, air and soil) of contaminant transport and behavior. He holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering and two MS degrees in Groundwater Hydrology and Geological Engineering. He also has a specialized B.S. degree and years of related experience in the design and operation of water supply, sewerage and wastewater treatment systems. He has extensive academic training and experience in the development and application of environmental fate transport and risk models and has applied many of these, including several air dispersion and groundwater models to risk assessment studies.

After a four–month tenure as the DOE Acting Site Manager, Portsmouth, Ohio, starting immediately following the plant’s unexpected shutdown of the uranium enrichment operations and potential loss of 2000 jobs, the community leaders and politicians wrote that Dr. Adams is someone who “had broken down past barriers between DOE and the local community …swiftly brought resolution to many projects of local importance that have been left open for years…integrated the community’s future development visions with the DOE’s long range mission…established himself as a dependable partner with the community” and has a “CAN DO attitude…is the right individual, with the right qualities, at the right time for Pike County and its future…”
